Meet the Liermanns
A family business, from the ground up.
Outdoors by Design is owned and run by Travis and Laree Liermann. Everything we do, from the landscapes we build to the trees we grow, comes back to this family and the North Idaho crews who work alongside us.
It started with landscapes.
Travis and Laree Liermann built Outdoors by Design as a landscape company, working alongside builders, architects and designers on homes across North Idaho. Our crews handle new installs and keep caring for those properties afterward, with ongoing grounds care and mowing. Most of that work comes from the same contractors year after year, and the calendar fills well ahead.
Landscaping taught them what a good tree really is: one that arrives healthy, transplants well and keeps thriving through a mountain winter. For fifteen years they sourced much of their stock from a local nursery that did exactly that, Apple Creek Propagators.
Then we started growing.
The next step was a tree farm of their own. With room and time to let trees size up, the Liermanns began growing big balled and burlapped shade trees, the kind that anchor a finished landscape on day one.
Those trees found a following well beyond North Idaho, with landscapers in Montana, the Hailey and Sun Valley area, and the Salt Lake and Park City region all buying for high elevation projects.
A call we never expected.
We never went looking for it. John and Rosalyn Driedger had spent three decades building Apple Creek, and they were not advertising a sale. They wanted someone who would carry on what they had built for the community, and they kept hearing the same names.
John had already been a mentor to us for years. When he asked, the answer was easy. John and Rosalyn are guiding the transition, and the Apple Creek crew keeps doing what it does best.

Outdoors by Design builds and cares for the landscapes. Apple Creek Propagators, our wholesale tree nursery, grows the stock in three forms.

Propagated from our own cuttings and grafts, field grown and lifted each fall for spring sale.

Large caliper shade and evergreen trees, dug to order in spring and fall.

Trees, shrubs and Apple Creek’s well known peonies, available all year.
